The Kirby Company is a well-known vacuum cleaner manufacturer that has been selling Kirby Vacuum Cleaners since the 1930s. Located in Cleveland, Ohio, the company has dealers in numerous countries around the world, and has maintained its original sales strategy of door-to-door sales that first began in the 1920s. Jim Kirby designed the first Kirby Vacuum Cleaners in the wake of World War One, but the units were not called Kirby Vacuum Cleaners until the 1930s. The Kirby distribution system helped them to maintain steady market share, which increased dramatically in 1970 with the release of one of the most popular Kirby models, the Kirby Classic. This and subsequent models have maintained an old-fashioned retro look that has proven to be a success with customers who swear by Kirby Vacuum Cleaners.

Kirby has a mixed reputation, with most users satisfied with the Kirby Vacuum Cleaners they use on a daily basis, but some focusing instead on the alleged Kirby Vacuum scam. The Kirby Vacuum scam involves allegations that Kirby salespeople use high pressure tactics to sell the Kirby vacuums to customers who often cannot afford or use them. Notable targets of these highly charged sales tricks are senior citizens and disabled persons for whom the units would provide little benefit - just high costs. It has been noted by many that Kirby Vacuum Cleaners are pricier than their rivals, but most customers feel that the high price is more than offset by the increased quality and workmanship of the Kirby cleaner. Kirby also has one of the most respected warranty plans available for any vacuum cleaner product, with most plans offering a two or three year initial factory warranty that is later followed by a lifetime factory rebuild assurance. This assurance provides for the unit to be rebuilt or replaced (if damaged in a fire) for a set price that is entirely based upon the U.S. Consumer Price Index.

Despite its generally positive reputation, complaints about the so-called Kirby Vacuum scam have continued to trickle in around the country. Many of the complaints are from residents who purchased their vacuum cleaner for a much higher price than their neighbor, and somehow feel cheated because they were not able to negotiate as well as others. Kirby has done little about those complaints, but does take other Kirby Vacuum scam charges more seriously. In fact, salespeople who are proven to have engaged in high-pressure r deceptive sales techniques are discharged by the company. Despite fallout from those allegations, Kirby cleaners remain a popular choice for many homeowners.
